Dear all,
Today was my last day working for Roche Molecular Systems.
I had worked for them for six years. It was steady work. They paid for my Master's degree in Statistics. And they appreciated me: while a whole section of my co-workers were laid off, they kept me on.
But I have a new opportunity in a very different field, that I can talk about now.
On February 1, I will join the LOCKSS project: an open-source project dedicated to preserving electronic knowledge. This new job is a dream. I get the advantages of working for a start-up: it has a small crew of dedicated, intelligent people. I geet the advantages of working for a open-source team: everyone will be able to see my code. (Yes, everyone.) And I get the advantages of working for a large university (A library dedicated to mathematics and computer science! Speakers and seminars! The chance to go PFFFFFFFFFTHPT! at Donald Rumsfeld!)
I'm looking forward to the new opportunity... and really looking forward to a few weeks of rest. Or at least Further Confusion.
Take care, all!
I wonder what it's like to have a real job, be appreciated at that job, and know that you are good at your job. I have never known any of these things and I probably never will because I'm too stupid, inefficient, and talentless to have any of that. I can't even handle a lowly retail job.
And did I hear that correctly? You're making it to FC? Please let me know if you are because I'd love to see you. You already have my cell. I promise if you call me at FC to meet up I'll respond or get back to you :P
I will be very easy to find.
Go to Con Ops. I'm pretty much in charge of it this year. You'll find me there.
I really do want to meet you and talk with you. Please do seek me out.
"Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you — you of little faith?" -- Matthew 6:26-30
But yeah, I'd be glad to meet you at FC. Con Ops. I'll have to remember that :)

I'm finally interviewing at Google (your competition?)
Any chance that I'll see you when you interview?
-- HUUUUUGS!
Congratulations, and see you at FC!
I'm curious what led you to seek a new direction like that. Is this something you've been thinking about for a while, or was it more of a case of a great position just opening up and jumping on it?
BTW, the Matthew quote was just what I needed to read tonight. Thanks.
Mostly, the revenue source is the network of libraries. Libraries act as backups to each other: libraries that proved that they had work X in the past can receive copies from other libraries.
It also receives money from Stanford University, from Sun Microsystems, and other sources. (I don't trust this source as much in the long term, but I'm grateful for it in the short term.)
I can also think of other revenue sources that are possible. When I get there, I'll see what's being done -- and what's not.
That's most awesome!
