Fluorescent Dreams Wax Cylinders - Unidentified Flying Object

20:29 - Unidentified Flying Object

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

Time: Approximately 20:08 (8:08 pm) (PDT)
Duration: About 3 seconds
Date: 15 April 2008
Location: Newark, CA. (37 32' 19"N, 122 33' 02"W)

Driving home from dinner, I looked up. A bright light caught my eye: slightly brighter than the two airplanes in the sky.

The bright light moved fairly quickly: it covered about 15 degrees of arc in about 3 seconds.

I saw a (much smaller) spark fly off of the light, then the spark faded out.

The main light itself winked out while it was in the air.

I heard nothing; I was in my car.

I have no idea what it was. It seemed too fast for an airplane, but too slow for a meteor.

Take care, all.

Was there a reddish tinge, redolent of tomato sauce? It could have been a Flying Pasghetti Monster. (yes, a: who says it's a monotheism?)

In which case you are even one better in the final letter, having seen a UFP: Unidentified Flying Pasta.

Best encountered outside of school lunchrooms. ;-)

*giggle!*

Sadly, there's no way to say, "I saw something weird in the sky" without sounding like Shirley MacLaine.

I only saw something odd in the sky. I have no clue what it was. My first guess would have been a meteor -- if a meteor would stay in the sky for more than 2 seconds.

Given that it was slow, broke up, and winked out, my first guess would be some sort of low-density space junk, like a used-up booster tank or the like.

OK, something was going on. We were on 280 south, and had the same thing happen. The EXACT same thing.

WTF...?

A quick look at visible satellites doesn't seem to fit, mainly because the two real possibilities would have been moving too slowly.

Still, if the path matches, it might have been.

The apparent speed as you observe it doesn't mean much. In three dimensions, its actual speed could have been much faster. Assuming it was falling, there was a point somewhere on the ground where one could stand and it would appear not to move at all (though that may not be a good place to stand).

If the meteor is heading your direction at just the right angle it can appear to travel slow.

:3 I know exactly what this is. It's a Taurid Meteor. I recently saw one. Apparently they're fairly common, despite how shocking it is no one would notice something that looked like a plane crashed...

Here's what I described the event as:

"It was around 3am or so, and I happened to be looking out the window, when this bright object moved across the sky towards the ground. I didn't hear any sound. It was bright white, flashing as if burning up, and there was a slight red color at the bottom. I didn't know what it was because meteor showers are across the sky, dim, and last only a second, while this was close and lasted about 3 seconds (going from my field of vision - roof to horizon)."

If you've seen Taurid meteors that lasted so long, then that's a very likely candidate.

My current best guess had been that it was a flare, either from San Francisco Bay or possibly the ocean. (I was facing that direction.)

I was also facing San Francisco, and the astronomer I asked told me the reason I saw it in that portion of the sky was Taurid meteors come from Taurus, which was behind me. It was the largest thing I've seen in the sky besides a landing plane @_@
