8:19 - Florida Christian License Plates

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

For a time, Florida considered making Christian license plates: license plates with a cross, a stained glass window, and the words "I believe".

In the end, state lawmakers did not include the design in the final bill.

A shame. You see, since the Constitution prohibits establishing any State religion, it's likely that Florida would have to allow all religions on its license plate. And I would love a license plate with the Flying Spaghetti Monster on it...

(Hat tip to Stephen Colbert for pointing out the license plates.)

I'd like a Flying Spaghetti Monster license plate, too.

I generally associate "I believe" with flying saucers, or the X-Files.

Agreed: If such vanity-plates were ever legal in .UK I'd want one that says I Question.

But then there's Indiana...

...with this plate. It is not considered a specialty plate, and no additional fee is charged for it - just like the regular state plate. The legality of this plate was challenged, and recently upheld in state court.

I have the "Support Our Tropps" plate, m'self.

You could just drive out to Florida and toss spaghetti out your window onto the windshields of oncoming drivers. That counts, right? ;-)

what rather bugs me about this, is that the money doesn't go towards state revenues...

"The proposed "I Believe" plate would have cost drivers an extra $25 annual fee and would have given that money to the Orlando-based nonprofit Faith in Teaching Inc., which supports faith-based school activities."

Which faiths get money and which ones don't? That kinda... makes me nervous. Would mosques get money? Unitarian churches? or would it be funneled into mainstream Christian only activities that further sideline any religious freedom?

Well, I'm a Christian and I don't stand on street corners with a bullhorn. The trick is not to force your beliefs down anyone's throat; if an opportunity presents itself to talk about your religion, do so, in a loving way. People will form their own opinions about you from your actions. If they want to follow your religion, they will. Simple as that.
